Giorgi Tsagareli

Giorgi Tsagareli was a highly respected documentary photographer whose work bore witness to some of the most formative and turbulent moments in modern Georgian history.

A trained engineer by education, Tsagareli turned to photography in his early 30s after the birth of his son. His shift from engineering to visual storytelling marked the beginning of a career that would span socially-charged photojournalism, conflict photography, and deeply human documentary work.

Tsagareli’s portfolio includes photo-reports for Georgian newspapers, youth press, informational agencies, and magazine. He gained recognition for documenting protests, social upheavals, and conflicts in Georgia as well as other conflict zones in the South Caucasus during the collapse of the Soviet Union and afterwards.

Tsagareli’s powerful imagery remains a vital record of Georgia’s history in the late 20th century – from war and protest to daily life. His photographs are valued not only as artistic works but also as historical documents that capture the emotional truth of societal change.
