Artist Bio: Yuri Mechitov is one of Georgia’s most influential photographers. Originally trained in mining engineering, he turned to photography in the 1970s and held his first solo exhibition in 1979. Over four decades, Mechitov has worked as a photojournalist, artist, educator, and cultural documentarian.

He co-founded the influential photo group “Point of View” in 1985 and played a key role in shaping modern Georgian photography. Mechitov has participated in over 150 exhibitions internationally and published several notable works, including a monumental 460-page album on filmmaker Sergo Parajanov, the first Georgian photo guidebook, and the landmark “Georgian Photography 1955-2012.”

He is also co-founder of a photography school in Tbilisi and remains a passionate advocate for preserving Georgia’s photographic heritage.
