Behind Blue Eyes is a charitable initiative that supports creativity, resilience, and aspiration among children living in Ukraine’s frontline and liberated villages. Disposable film cameras are distributed to children, who receive a week to enjoy them and no further instruction. What emerges is a body of photojournalism uniquely infused with the light of youth that persists through the harrowing conditions of war.
Beyond sharing visions of wartime childhood to international audiences, Behind Blue Eyes has evolved its process to reward children for their artistic expression. Participants submit their used cameras with wishlists outlining dreams that range from toys, pets, and phones, to the bigger picture – an end to the explosions; peace in Ukraine. Donations to Behind Blue Eyes fund the fulfillment of their wishlists as well as other reinvestment initiatives all centered on cultivating creative engagement in youth and preserving the innate optimism of childhood.
Film photography and merchandise will be available at Fotografia from 6-22 November. All proceeds will go to Behind Blue Eyes in continued support of Ukraine’s most vulnerable children
